We are pleased to invite you to the sixth IGNA annual meditation retreat! The IGNA 2019 Meditation Retreat will take place in Bruges, Belgium. IGNA’s annual meditation retreat is the main annual event in Europe where new and long term students of Gyalwai Nyugu Rinpoche come together to receive Dharma teachings, meditation instructions and deepen their practice of meditation to develop compassion and wisdom in a form of silent residential retreat. The retreat is open to all.
Gyalwai Nyugu Rinpoche is the head of Achen Monastery in the Golok region of Amdo. Rinpoche is an accomplished meditation master and a lineage holder in the Longsal and Longchen Nyingtik of Dzogchen meditation in Tibetan Buddhist Traditions. During the retreat Rinpoche will give us teachings via Skype. He might be able to come in person but we will not be able to confirm this before the retreat. Read more about Gyalwai Nyugu Rinpoche.
Venerable Pieter Johnston (Lakshyong Jyamtso lama) is the instructor Gyalwai Nyugu Rinpoche appointed for English speaking students. He has been practicing Dzogchen Meditation since 2006 with Gyalwai Nyugu Rinpoche. Venerable Pieter travels twice a year to Europe giving lectures, teaching meditation and supporting retreats. Venerable Pieter Johnston will be translating for Rinpoche, teaching and guiding us during the retreat.
We will start early in the morning according to the monastic tradition and alternate meditation, teachings and other practices during the day. Teachings will be held in both English and Chinese. All the practices during the retreat will be guided by Gyalwai Nyugu Rinpoche and/or Venerable Pieter Johnston. The retreat routines will include:
The retreat takes place at Hotel Lodewijk van Male, which is situated on the outskirts of Bruges, Belgium. Hotel Lodewijk van Male is situated 6 km from Bruges train station, and about 5 km from the city of Bruges. This venue offers comfortable accommodation, catering of vegetarian food and facilities suitable for Dharma teachings, group meditation and practice.
Time: Check in between 3 pm - 6 pm 24 March. Dinner will be served at 6.30 pm. Check out will be after breakfast but latest 11 am 31 March. We can only provide a residential retreat that must be attended in its entirety due to the arrangements with Hotel Lodewijk van Male. A full retreat also provides a rare opportunity to deepen your meditation practice.
Price: 460 EUR/person, for participants observing both the 2 day Precepts, in a shared double room. 485 EUR/person, for participants observing the one day Precepts and the 2 day Precepts only once, in a shared double room. 510 EUR/person, for participants observing only the one day Precepts, in a shared double room. Men and women will be accommodated separately. The price includes 7 nights, bed linen, towel and final cleaning. Breakfasts and lunches are included for the whole stay (as per the prices mentioned above). Dinner will be served in the evening of 24 March and light snacks on the evening of 30 March. We don’t have the possibility to accommodate any children during this retreat.
Payment: Payment details will be sent out at the end of January 2018 and the retreat payment must be submitted by the end of February 2019.
It is only by taking a disciplined approach and by making maximum effort that a participant of the Retreat can fully grasp the practice and benefit most from it.
Observation of the Eight Precepts during the whole retreat. Observation of the one day Precepts of not eating midday and before dawn of the next day and for March 25th and the 28th for the two day Precepts which involves not eating after midday of the 1st day, not eating the second day until after dawn on the 3rd morning. That is, the 2 day Precepts will be held on Monday 25th March (ending at dawn on Wednesday 27th) and Thursday 28th (ending at dawn on Saturday 30th). One day Precepts will be held on the 27th.
Noble Silence. This is a silent retreat which means no talking to others. You can only talk to Venerable Pieter or to the volunteers who are there to help if you have any questions.
No devices such as computers, phones and tablets can be used during the retreat. All such devices must be deposited with the Retreat Management Team until the retreat ends. A telephone number will be provided to you in case of an emergency.
